Brew Review: The VSSL Nesting Pour Over Kit

At Ramshorn Coffee, I'm always on the lookout for tools that make brewing great coffee different—without sacrificing quality. I don't always get it on the first couple tries but when it hits, it hits. Whether you’re brewing at home, in the office, or out in the wild, the right gear can elevate the entire experience. One piece of equipment that has really impressed us is the VSSL Nesting Pour Over Kit.

This compact, thoughtfully designed kit delivers everything you need to brew a clean, balanced cup of coffee—anywhere.

First Impressions

The VSSL Nesting Pour Over Kit is all about smart design. Every component nests neatly inside a rugged, travel-ready metal tube, making it ideal for minimalists, travelers, and anyone who values organization. Nothing rattles, nothing feels flimsy, and everything has a purpose.

What I love most is that it doesn’t feel like “compromise gear.” Despite its portability, the VSSL pour over produces a cup that rivals what you’d expect from a full-size setup at home. Seriously, I look at gear as a performance enhancement. The clothes I wear, the camera I use, I want to enhance performance of my mediocre skills.

This is the second piece of VSSL coffee gear I have, like the tumbler (review to follow) the nesting pour-over is top notch!

What you get

Inside the kit, you’ll find:

  • A stainless steel pour over dripper

  • A double-walled stainless steel mug

  • A reusable mesh filter (paper filters optional)

  • A protective nesting tube that holds everything together

The stainless steel construction is durable, easy to clean, and perfect for brewing coffee on the go—no glass, no plastic, no worries.

How It Brews

The VSSL dripper is designed for even extraction. The mesh filter allows oils and aromatics through while still producing a clean cup. The result is a brew that highlights sweetness, clarity, and origin character—especially when paired with freshly roasted coffee.

It’s particularly well-suited for medium to light roasts, where subtle flavors really shine.

How to Brew Coffee with the VSSL Nesting Pour Over Kit

Here’s a simple, reliable method we recommend using with Ramshorn Coffee beans.

What You’ll Need

  • 20 grams of freshly ground coffee (medium-fine grind, similar to sea salt)

  • 300 grams (about 10 oz) of hot water

  • VSSL Nesting Pour Over Kit

  • Kettle (gooseneck preferred)

  • Scale and timer (optional, but helpful)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Heat Your Water
Bring water to about 200–205°F (just off the boil).

2. Prepare the Filter
Place the metal filter into the dripper. If you’re using a paper filter, rinse it with hot water to remove any paper taste and warm the mug.

3. Add Coffee
Add 20 grams of ground coffee to the filter. Gently shake to level the bed.

4. Bloom
Start your timer and pour about 40 grams of water over the coffee, just enough to saturate it. Let it bloom for 30–45 seconds. This allows trapped gases to escape and improves extraction.

5. Continue Pouring
Slowly pour the remaining water in steady, circular motions, keeping the water level consistent. Aim to finish pouring by about 2:00–2:30 minutes.

6. Drawdown & Enjoy
Let the coffee fully drain. Total brew time should land around 3–4 minutes. Remove the dripper, give the coffee a gentle swirl, and enjoy.

Final Thoughts

The VSSL Nesting Pour Over Kit is a great example of form meeting function. It’s compact without feeling cramped, durable without feeling heavy, and simple without being limiting. Whether you’re brewing at home, at work, or on the road, it’s a dependable way to make excellent coffee wherever you are.

Pair it with freshly roasted Ramshorn Coffee, and you’ve got a setup that’s as reliable as it is delicious.

If I had one complaint: the filter is messy. That's all. So what. It's still awesome!

Happy brewing. ☕
